The nine management classics that shaped modern management (as per Jim Collins - Author of another classic Good to Great) :-

2. The Human Side of Enterprise by Douglas McGregor (1960)
3. The Soul of A New Machine by Tracy Kidder (1981)
4. The Practice of Management by Peter F. Drucker (1954)
5. Competitive Strategy by Michael Porter (1980)
6. Out of the Crisis by W. Edwards Deming (1982)
7. Creativity in Business by Michael Ray and Rochelle Myers (1986)
8. In Search of Excellence by Tom Peters and Bob Waterman (1982)
9. The Social Psychology of Organizing by Karl E. Weick (1969)

I am not that widely read on formal mgmt either although I do read a lot of mgmt. Two of the best books I've read this year are Execution by Larry Bossidy & Ram Charan and Good to Great by Jim Collins. I would highly recommend both of these to anyone seeking to be a better manager.
